release at least six additional works, including a poetry collection, a novel, two memoirs and two translations. DVAN will invite community members and supporters to join the publishing journey by contributing to its fundraising initiatives. Those gifts will be used to support DVAN as the demand for such stories continues to rise. DVAN also hopes to expand the series further. Next, it will increase its publications through its other partnership with Kaya Press. Pelaud emphasizes the importance of not being fooled by the appearance of success. The legacy of building, connecting and hustling inherited from refugee and immigrant parents still holds the Vietnamese American community together. The work of bringing these vital voices to the forefront continues. It is driven by the determination of the community itself. *Minh Huynh Vu is the project coordinator for the Diasporic Vietnamese Artists Network Series imprint, in collaboration with Texas Tech University Press. Beyond DVAN, they are a Ph.D. student at Yale University studying the ongoing afterlife of the war in Vietnam.* This article is available at 5 reading levels at https://newsela.com.

children and grandchildren of Vietnamese immigrants continue to navigate cultural divides, family history and intergenerational trauma. Each of these experiences has been meticulously woven into the fabric of Vietnamese American literature and art. Despite the undeniable success of a few famous authors, significant challenges remain in bringing these powerful stories to the public sphere. That makes it all the more important to support and celebrate Vietnamese artists. **More Than 2 Million U.S. Residents Claim Vietnamese Ancestry Or Origin** The Migration Policy Institute reports that more than 2 million U.S. residents claim Vietnamese heritage. Some of them were born in Vietnam, while others are the children of people who were born there. The group of Vietnamese people who now live outside of Vietnam is called the Vietnamese diaspora. Over the past decade, writers from the Vietnamese diaspora have gained success and popularity. Viet Thanh Nguyen, Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai, Monique Truong and Ocean Vuong have all become well-known authors. However, white authors continue to receive the most attention in the publishing world. For example, only 22 of the 220 books on The New York Times bestseller list for fiction in 2020 were written by people of color. **Planting New Roots For Retelling Vietnamese American Stories** When members of the Vietnamese diaspora write, their efforts go beyond just increasing representation. They are actively creating better conditions to support the next generation of writers. Isabelle Thuy Pelaud and Viet Thanh Nguyen are among the leaders challenging racism within the publishing industry. Pelaud is a professor and Nguyen is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author. Together, they co-founded the Diasporic Vietnamese Artists Network (DVAN). DVAN recently partnered with Travis Snyder, editor-in-chief of Texas Tech University Press (TTUP) to create the DVAN Series. The new publishing platform will also promote works by diasporic Vietnamese writers and plant new roots for retelling Vietnamese stories. DVAN makes the final decisions and steers the partnership, while TTUP offers support. At first, the DVAN Series focused on supporting Vietnamese writers as they published their first works. It has grown to support authors who are further into their careers as well. This spring, DVAN is launching the following new collections by critically acclaimed authors: "Hà Nội at Midnight" by Bảo Ninh, Quan Ha and Cab Tran; "Nothing Follows" by Lan Duong; and the 25th-anniversary edition of "Watermark: Vietnamese American Poetry and Prose" edited by Barbara Tran, Monique Truong and Khoi Luu.

Photo: Provided by Minh Huynh Vu. April 30, 2023, marked 48 years since North Vietnamese soldiers took control of Saigon, the capital of Vietnam. United States forces removed U.S. citizens and South Vietnamese people soon after. That series of events, often called the fall of Saigon, marked the end of the Vietnam War. It is important to listen to Vietnamese voices in conversations about the long-term effects of the war on America. Today, some Vietnamese Americans have told terrifying stories of escaping Vietnam by boat. Many others speak about overcoming challenges as refugees in a new land.
